Overtime Pay Calculator
Enter your regular hourly rate, your regular hours, and any overtime hours. Overtime is paid at a multiple of your regular rate; 1.5x (time-and-a-half) is the standard rate in many workplaces, but your contract or local law decides your actual rate.
How it works
Total weekly pay = (regular hours × rate) + (overtime hours × rate × multiplier).
What is time and a half?
Time and a half means an overtime rate of 1.5 times your regular hourly rate: a $20 wage becomes $30 for each overtime hour. In the United States, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires covered non-exempt employees to be paid at least time and a half for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. Some states, contracts and union agreements set different thresholds or pay double time (2x) in specific situations, so check the rules that apply to you. All figures here are gross pay, before tax.
Time and a half rate table
Quick answers for common hourly rates. Your overtime rate is your regular rate × 1.5.
| Regular rate | Time and a half (1.5x) | Double time (2x) |
|---|---|---|
| $10/hr | $15.00/hr | $20.00/hr |
| $15/hr | $22.50/hr | $30.00/hr |
| $20/hr | $30.00/hr | $40.00/hr |
| $25/hr | $37.50/hr | $50.00/hr |
| $30/hr | $45.00/hr | $60.00/hr |
| $35/hr | $52.50/hr | $70.00/hr |
| $40/hr | $60.00/hr | $80.00/hr |
Worked example
At $20 an hour with 40 regular hours and 5 overtime hours at 1.5x: regular pay is $800, overtime pay is 5 × $20 × 1.5 = $150, total $950 for the week.
Frequently asked questions
What is time and a half?
Time and a half is an overtime rate of 1.5 times your regular hourly rate. At $20 an hour, the time and a half rate is $30 an hour. In the US, the FLSA requires at least this rate for hours over 40 in a workweek for covered non-exempt employees.
How much is time and a half for $20 an hour?
The rate is $20 × 1.5 = $30 an hour. Five overtime hours at that rate pay $150, on top of $800 for 40 regular hours, for $950 gross in the week.
When does overtime usually start?
Commonly after 40 hours in a week, but rules differ by country, state and contract. Check your employment contract and local labour law; this calculator applies the multiplier you enter.
Is overtime taxed differently?
In most tax systems overtime is taxed as ordinary income in the same bands. A bigger payslip can push more income into a higher band, but overtime itself is not a special tax category.
